Why is the thyroid gland so important?
The thyroid gland is an endocrine organ that produces hormones to regulate our metabolism, so we need it to work properly!
When the thyroid is out of balance, it can trigger hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is characterized by an overactive thyroid gland that produces and releases an excess of thyroid hormones into the body. It is often caused by overactive thyroid nodules, an attack on the immune system, the consumption of foods or medications that contain high levels of iodine, or a viral infection.
Hypothyroidism, on the other hand, is associated with a lack of thyroid hormones. This could be from a variety of factors, including iodine deficiency, Hashimoto’s, and damage to the thyroid/surgical removal.
Whether your thyroid is low or high, it’s important to look into potential food sensitivities, nutrient depletions, stressors, possible chronic infections, toxins, gut health and more.
