Food sensitivities are sneaky little devils. If you’ve ever had an allergic reaction, odds are that you knew immediately what made you sick. But if you have a sensitivity, you may not experience symptoms until up to a week later!
As with allergies, you can have low, moderate, or high levels of sensitivity. If you’re highly sensitive to something, you could start experiencing symptoms within the hour. However, it’s common to notice symptoms upon waking up the next day.
Symptoms of food sensitivities can include:
• Respiratory problems, such as congestion, runny nose, drainage, coughing, and recurring sinus infections.
• Gas, bloating, nausea, and other digestive issues.
• Headaches
• Brain fog
• Fatigue
• Inability to focus
Because it can take so long to notice these symptoms, it is extremely hard to track food sensitivities. And many of the culprits of your symptoms may be completely unexpected—i.e., not the typical dairy, gluten, or nut suspects.
After doing allergy and sensitivity tests through our wellness program, a few of our team members at Health Connection have discovered they are sensitive to chocolate, grapefruit, oatmeal, rice, blueberries, vanilla, and tea (just to name a few). If those sound like strange foods to be affected by, we thought so, too. Some of these items were once listed among our favorite foods. We even ate some on a regular basis because they are considered healthy for most people.
When you eat certain foods often, not realizing you are sensitive to them, you’ll feel downright sick 90% of the time. But if your symptoms aren’t considered “serious” or seem inconsistent, it becomes all too easy to get used to them. We simplify our health problems and say “that’s life,” forgetting that we don’t have to just live with our symptoms. It’s time to take control of our health!
If you’re experiencing symptoms of food sensitivities, contact our office for a consultation. Our personalized wellness programs are designed to get to the source of your symptoms, give you clear steps to recovery, and facilitate the support you need to reach your goals. These programs are even offered online so Dr. Alamilla can help patients anywhere in the country!
You don’t have to “just live with” your symptoms. Take control of your health and live life to the fullest!
